Lent & Easter at SSUMC

The Lenten theme for his year will be, "Overcoming". On the first Sunday in Lent, Sunday, February 21st, we will hear the story about Jesus' 40 days in the wilderness where he overcomes the temptation to take an easier path towards the kingdom; along with overcoming the realities of hunger and the elements of wilderness. During those days, Jesus overcame these things because he had already found strength in God's love for him; a love expressed just before this event at his baptism.

*Please note that changes are likely to be made for weather issues and safety issues related to COVID 19.  Check back for adjustments and modifications to our schedule of activities.

Music

Throughout Lent we will be having special music every Sunday through live quartets and handbells.

Lent Kits

We will have two types of lent kits available at SSUMC, one for families with kids, and one for families without kids.  Be sure to pick up yours so that you can join in the communal time with us.

Ash Wednesday

Our Ash Wednesday service will be in person and virtual.  If you are watching virtually, you will need to come by the church at the above stated times and pick up your ashes. If you are attending in service, we will be doing the imposition of ashes as you leave outside on the State Street steps.  We will also have drive thru ashes available following the service in the back parking lot.  Due to Covid issues including the lack of fellowship opportunities, we will not be joining with Taylor Chapel AME Church this year.  We look forward to renewing that great tradition again next year.

Lenten Study

We will be studying Henri Nouwen’s book called, “The Return of the Prodigal Son”. We are invited to consider Nouwen’s ideas about our being God’s "home" and his ideas about what a "homecoming" looks like. What a perfect story to use in the story of the prodigal. One of the key thoughts from the book is this: “‘Coming home’ meant, for me, walking step by step toward the One who awaits me with open arms and wants to hold me in an eternal embrace.” In many ways, he speaks for us all.
